All About Discord
Below, we’ll walk you through what exactly Discord is, why it’s important, and why it’s used in the NFT space.

WTF is Discord?

Discord is one of the main platforms and tools for growing and cultivating Web3 communities.
Think of it as a giant group chatting platform, full of people who share a common interest. Discord has been heavily used by the gaming community because of its integration capabilities, but it has also been adopted by the Web3 community at large to be the chosen platform to grow and cultivate NFT communities.
There are thousands upon thousands of Discord servers, each with their own community, common interests, and, more often than not, rituals. If you have an interest, it is likely that a Discord server exists with a community of people who share that common interest.

Servers

Discord is composed of servers - and each server can be thought of as its own community. Servers are themed around a project or topic of interest, and are made up of text and audio channels that are organized into different categories. Within the channels, you can share videos and images, embed links, listen to music, attend events, and much more.

Channels

Channels exist as mini chat rooms that organize information and conversation. This brings a new level of organization to chatting platforms. If you’ve ever used a chat room, such as Telegram or WhatsApp, there is typically only one channel where all conversations happen, which makes it really difficult to follow and contribute to the conversation - particularly, if there are hundreds or even thousands of people in the chat. Discord allows for multiple channels, and each channel is themed, directing the conversation and flow of people.

Discord + NFT Projects

Most NFT projects have a Discord server, where the project creators provide an experience for the holders as well as for the NFT community at large.
Discord is where all project information is stored, where giveaways, contests and other project-related activities happen, and where both newcomers and holders can connect with community. This is also where all project announcements and updates, artwork reveals, and utility sneak peeks are made. Long-term utility items and benefits for holders are often announced in Discord first before anywhere else.

NFT Communities

Communities form bonds, rituals, and special terminology that build camaraderie amongst members. Community is the lifeblood of NFT projects, which makes Discord extremely valuable for project creators when it comes to project longevity and NFT holder retention.
NFT project Discord servers give the community an opportunity to speak and connect directly with the members of the project’s team, as well as with the artists and developers. Community members are also given the space to give feedback to the project creators. These creators often use this feedback to iterate on their project based on preferences of the community and the holders, which is who they built it for in the first place!

Discord + NFT Collectors

People contemplating buying an NFT often join the project’s Discord server and gauge the community first before buying in. This gives them the opportunity to get real feedback from holders as well as get a feel for how the existing community operates and interacts with each other.
